1. Read the poem again, and work in pairs or groups to do the following tasks.
(i) Write down the words that describe the movements of the tiger in the cage and in the wild.
In the cage: stalking, quiet rage, ignoring visitors
In the wild: lurking, sliding, snarling, baring his white fangs, terrorising the village
(ii) Find the words that describe the two places where the tiger is present.

2. Notice the use of a word repeated in lines such as these: "On pads of velvet quiet, In his quiet rage." What do you think is the effect of this repetition?
Answer: The repetition of the word "quiet" highlights the contrast between the tiger's silent movement and the anger that exists inside him. Although the tiger moves quietly, he is actually full of rage because he is trapped in the cage.
3. Read the following two poems — one by William Blake and the other by Pablo Neruda. Then work in groups and discuss the following questions.
(i) What do you think is the theme of the poem?
Answer: The main theme is the loss of freedom. The poem shows the difference between a tiger living freely in the jungle and a tiger trapped inside a zoo cage.
(ii) What is the poet trying to convey through the tiger's situation?
Answer: The poet conveys that wild animals should live freely in their natural surroundings. Keeping a wild animal in a cage takes away its freedom and causes frustration and anger.
(iii) How does the tiger's behaviour change when he is in the cage?
Answer: In the cage, the tiger becomes quiet but remains angry and frustrated. Instead of freely hunting and moving through the jungle, he can only walk inside the limited space of the cage.
