Narration (Direct aur Indirect Speech) English grammar ka wo topic hai jisme hum kisi ke kahe hue shabdon ko do tarike se likh sakte hain - jaise ke jaise kaha gaya (Direct), ya apne shabdon mein bata kar (Indirect). Board exams mein Narration Change ke sawaal aksar aate hain. Is post mein hum iske sabhi rules Hindi mein aasan examples ke saath seekhenge.
Direct Speech kya hai
Direct Speech mein kisi vyakti ke exact (bilkul waise ke waise) shabdon ko Quotation Marks (" ") mein likha jaata hai.
Example: Ram said, "I am reading a book."
Indirect Speech kya hai
Indirect Speech mein kisi ke kahe hue baat ko apne shabdon mein, bina Quotation Marks ke, report kiya jaata hai. Isse Reported Speech bhi kehte hain.
Example: Ram said that he was reading a book.
Direct se Indirect banane ke Rules
Rule 1 - Reporting Verb Change
Agar Reporting Verb Present ya Future Tense mein ho, to koi badlaav nahi hota. Agar Past Tense mein ho (said), to Tense peeche (back-shift) ho jaata hai.
says/say to -> tells/tell
said to -> told
Rule 2 - Tense Back-Shift (agar Reporting Verb Past mein ho)
Present Simple -> Past Simple
Direct: He said, "I play cricket."
Indirect: He said that he played cricket.
Present Continuous -> Past Continuous
Direct: He said, "I am playing cricket."
Indirect: He said that he was playing cricket.
Present Perfect -> Past Perfect
Direct: He said, "I have played cricket."
Indirect: He said that he had played cricket.
Past Simple -> Past Perfect
Direct: He said, "I played cricket."
Indirect: He said that he had played cricket.
Will -> Would
Direct: He said, "I will play cricket."
Indirect: He said that he would play cricket.
Can -> Could, May -> Might, Must -> Had to
Direct: He said, "I can play cricket."
Indirect: He said that he could play cricket.
Rule 3 - Pronoun Change
Pronoun speaker aur listener ke hisaab se badalta hai.
I -> He/She (subject ke hisaab se)
We -> They
My -> His/Her
You -> I/We/They (context ke hisaab se)
Rule 4 - Time aur Place Words Change
Now -> Then
Today -> That day
Tomorrow -> The next day
Yesterday -> The previous day / The day before
Here -> There
This -> That
These -> Those
Ago -> Before
Sentence ke Type ke hisaab se Rule
Assertive Sentence (Statement)
That use hota hai.
Direct: She said, "I am happy."
Indirect: She said that she was happy.
Interrogative Sentence (Question)
Reporting Verb said to -> asked ban jaata hai, aur Question Mark hat jaata hai. Agar Wh-word ho to wahi use hota hai, agar Yes/No question ho to if/whether lagta hai.
Direct: He said to her, "Where do you live?"
Indirect: He asked her where she lived.
Direct: He said to her, "Do you like tea?"
Indirect: He asked her if she liked tea.
Imperative Sentence (Order/Request)
Reporting Verb said to -> ordered/requested/advised ban jaata hai, aur Verb to + base form mein badal jaata hai.
Direct: He said to me, "Close the door."
Indirect: He ordered me to close the door.
Exclamatory Sentence (Feeling wala)
Reporting Verb exclaimed with joy/sorrow jaisa hota hai, aur that laga kar sentence normal statement jaisa ban jaata hai.
Direct: She said, "Wow! What a beautiful dress!"
Indirect: She exclaimed with joy that it was a very beautiful dress.
Common Mistakes
Galat: He said that he play cricket. (Tense back-shift bhool gaye)
Sahi: He said that he played cricket.
Galat: He asked that where I lived. (Question mein that nahi lagta)
Sahi: He asked where I lived.
