Reading for Meaning
I. Check Your Understanding
1. Do you think pot making is easy? If yes, why? If no, why not?
Answer: No, pot making is not easy. It requires physical effort, skill, patience and careful control of the clay. The clay has to be collected, prepared, shaped, dried and fired carefully.
2. Would Sentila be able to fulfil her dream of becoming a pot maker? Explain.
Answer: Yes. Sentila was deeply interested in pot making and continued trying even after failing for a year. With Onula's guidance and by carefully observing her mother, she eventually learnt the skill and successfully made many pots.
3. Do you think Mesoba and Arenla would support Sentila? Give a reason.
Answer: Initially, Arenla did not want Sentila to learn pot making because she believed weaving would provide more income and be less difficult. Mesoba, however, told the village council that they expected Sentila to become a good pot maker. Later, Arenla allowed Sentila to continue the work.
II. Pot-making Process
Question: Describe what Sentila learnt about the process of making pots.
Answer: Arenla took Sentila to the riverbank to collect grey and red clay. The clay was dug with a dao, carried to the work shed and soaked in a trough. It was then put into a bamboo cylinder and pounded until it became malleable dough. The potter pushed the left hand into the softened clay and rotated it while shaping it with a spatula in the right hand. After two or three days, the pots were given a final touch and then dried in the sun. Finally, they were arranged on a bed of hay and dried bamboo, covered with another layer and fired in a kiln.

- Terracotta — West Bengal
- Andretta pottery — Himachal Pradesh
- Karigari pottery — Tamil Nadu
- Longpi Black pottery — Manipur

II. Quality — John Galsworthy
The textbook asks students to read "Quality" by John Galsworthy, write its review and prepare a presentation highlighting the decline of traditional crafts and skills versus industrialisation and mass-produced goods.
Review
Answer: Quality is a story about Mr Gessler, a skilled bootmaker who believes that making boots is an art. He gives great attention to quality and craftsmanship. The story contrasts his careful handmade work with the growing popularity of machine-made, mass-produced goods.
