रविवार का दिन था और स्कूल बंद था। गायत्री बहुत उत्साहित थी। वह अपने पिता के साथ समुद्र में मछली पकड़ने जाने वाली थी। गायत्री के पिता मछुआरे थे और वे रोज समुद्र में मछली पकड़ने जाते थे। उन्होंने गायत्री से वादा किया था कि वे उसे मछली पकड़ना सिखाएंगे। गायत्री बड़ी होकर अपने पिता का व्यवसाय अपनाना चाहती थी।
जब गायत्री अपने जूतों के फीते बांध रही थी, तभी उसने रेडियो पर एक खबर सुनी। खबर में बताया गया कि अगले चौबीस घंटों में गांव में एक चक्रवाती तूफान आने की संभावना थी। गायत्री जानती थी कि चक्रवात के कारण तेज हवाएं, भारी बारिश और समुद्र में ऊंची लहरें उठेंगी। इससे पेड़ गिर सकते थे और घरों को नुकसान पहुंच सकता था। भारी बारिश के कारण बाढ़ भी आ सकती थी।
वह अपने पिता को चेतावनी देने के लिए तुरंत बाहर दौड़ी। दोनों ने बादलों की तेज गर्जना सुनी। बारिश की बड़ी-बड़ी बूंदें गिरने लगीं और उन्होंने समुद्र की लहरों को लगातार ऊंचा उठते देखा।
शाम तक चक्रवात उस क्षेत्र में पहुंच चुका था। लगातार बारिश हो रही थी और बाढ़ का पानी गायत्री के घर में प्रवेश कर चुका था। उसने घर की छोटी-छोटी जरूरी वस्तुएं जैसे भोजन, सामान, बर्तन, मोमबत्तियां और माचिस की डिब्बियां बिस्तरों, मेजों और कुर्सियों पर रख दी थीं। सुबह तक घर में बहुत अधिक पानी भर चुका था।
एक कठिन रात के बाद गायत्री छत पर गई और चारों ओर देखा। पूरा क्षेत्र पानी में डूबा हुआ था। केवल कुछ ही घर दिखाई दे रहे थे। उसके घर के पास बनी छोटी झोपड़ियां बाढ़ के कारण दिखाई नहीं दे रही थीं। बेघर लोग पेड़ों के ठूंठों और ऐसी जगहों पर बैठे थे जो पानी में नहीं डूबी थीं।
गायत्री ने सोचा कि उसे कुछ करना चाहिए। वह अपने घर के बाहर पड़ी नाव तक तैरकर गई। उसने नाव को पूरी ताकत से उन फंसे हुए लोगों की ओर चलाया। उसने लोगों को नाव में चढ़ने में मदद की और उन्हें टाउन हॉल तक ले गई। वहां जिला प्रशासन के अधिकारियों ने उनका स्वागत किया।
इसके बाद गायत्री घर वापस आई और अपनी मां से कुछ कपड़े, भोजन, माचिस की डिब्बियां और मोमबत्तियां मांगीं। उसने इन सामानों को waterproof bag में रखा और टाउन हॉल वापस चली गई। उसने सामान temporary shelter के supervisor को दे दिया। Supervisor ने उन सामानों को लोगों में बांट दिया। लोगों को गर्मी और खुशी महसूस हुई।
