बहुत समय पहले इंग्लैंड में Florence Nightingale नाम की एक महिला रहती थीं। वे एक nurse के रूप में बहुत प्रसिद्ध हुईं। उन्होंने बीमार लोगों की बहुत सहायता की ताकि वे ठीक हो सकें।
Florence का जन्म एक अच्छे परिवार में हुआ था। उनका नाम इटली के Florence शहर के नाम पर रखा गया, जहां उनका जन्म 12 मई 1820 को हुआ था। Florence इंग्लैंड में बड़ी हुईं। उनके पिता ने उन्हें घर पर पढ़ाया। उन्होंने English, Italian, Latin, German और French भाषाएं सीखीं तथा History और Philosophy का अध्ययन किया।
Florence अपनी बहन और माता-पिता के साथ कई देशों की यात्रा करती थीं। वे अपने लिए बहुत सारे notes भी लिखती थीं। एक दिन उन्होंने लिखा कि भगवान ने उनसे बात की और उन्हें अपनी सेवा के लिए बुलाया। उन्होंने जीवन में कुछ उपयोगी करने का निश्चय किया।
Florence दूसरे लोगों की मदद करना चाहती थीं और nurse बनना चाहती थीं। लेकिन उनके माता-पिता और बहन नहीं चाहते थे कि वे nurse बनें। उनके माता-पिता चाहते थे कि उनकी शादी किसी अमीर व्यक्ति से हो जाए।
उस समय अच्छे परिवारों की महिलाएं nurse नहीं बनती थीं। Nurses को बहुत कम पैसे मिलते थे और उन्हें बहुत कम सम्मान मिलता था। उस समय hospitals की स्थिति भी अच्छी नहीं थी। सफाई पर बहुत कम ध्यान दिया जाता था। Beds की sheets बदली नहीं जाती थीं और patients की hygiene का भी ध्यान नहीं रखा जाता था।
Florence ने इन बातों की परवाह नहीं की। उन्होंने secretly nurse बनने की योजना बनाई। उन्हें पहला अवसर तब मिला जब उनकी grandmother बीमार पड़ गईं। Florence उनके पास रहीं और उनकी देखभाल की। धीरे-धीरे उन्होंने पास के गांव के गरीब लोगों की सहायता करना शुरू कर दिया।
Florence को जल्द ही महसूस हुआ कि training न होने के कारण वे अपना काम ठीक से नहीं कर पा रही थीं। इसलिए उन्होंने medicine की books पढ़ना शुरू किया। कुछ वर्षों बाद उन्हें Germany जाने और एक hospital में nursing सीखने का अवसर मिला।
England लौटने पर वे London में 'Care of the Sick' नाम की organization की superintendent बनीं। उन्होंने nurses को training देना शुरू किया और काफी प्रसिद्ध हो गईं।
1854 में Crimean War शुरू हुआ। Government ने Florence Nightingale को Turkey के Sentari नामक स्थान पर भेजा। उन्हें forty nurses की team का incharge बनाया गया। Sentari का hospital युद्ध में घायल soldiers से भरा हुआ था। Florence ने hospital की स्थिति सुधारने के लिए बहुत मेहनत की।
उन्होंने hospital को साफ किया और एक नई kitchen बनवाई, जहां बेहतर भोजन दिया जाता था। उन्होंने अपने पैसे से patients के लिए नई sheets और clothes खरीदे। वे कई घंटे patients से बात करती थीं और उन्हें comfortable तथा happy रखने की पूरी कोशिश करती थीं।
रात में वे हाथ में lamp लेकर एक bed से दूसरे bed तक patients को देखने जाती थीं। इसी कारण उन्हें 'The Lady with the Lamp' नाम मिला।
Florence ने इतनी मेहनत की कि वे बहुत बीमार हो गईं, लेकिन उन्होंने England वापस जाने से मना कर दिया। 1860 में उन्होंने Nightingale School for Nurses शुरू किया। उनके प्रयासों के कारण पूरे देश में nurses को सम्मान मिलने लगा।
Florence Nightingale का निधन 13 अगस्त 1910 को London में हुआ। उन्होंने nursing के क्षेत्र में महत्वपूर्ण बदलाव किए।
