Swami नौ साल का लड़का था। वह Malgudi village में अपने माता-पिता और grandmother के साथ रहता था। एक दिन उसके पिता newspaper पढ़ रहे थे। Newspaper में एक गाँव के लड़के की बहादुरी की खबर थी। वह लड़का जंगल के रास्ते से घर लौटते समय एक tiger के सामने आ गया था। बाद में कुछ लोग वहाँ पहुँचे और उन्होंने tiger को मार दिया।
यह खबर पढ़ने के बाद Swami के पिता ने उससे पूछा कि वह इस घटना के बारे में क्या सोचता है। Swami ने कहा कि वह लड़का जरूर बहुत मजबूत और बड़ा आदमी रहा होगा, क्योंकि कोई छोटा लड़का tiger से कैसे लड़ सकता है।
Swami के पिता ने कहा कि किसी व्यक्ति में elephant जितनी strength होने के बावजूद वह coward हो सकता है, जबकि किसी दूसरे व्यक्ति में straw जितनी strength होने पर भी courage हो तो वह कुछ भी कर सकता है।
Swami ने कहा कि यदि उसके पास courage हो भी, तो tiger के attack करने पर वह क्या कर सकता है। तब उसके पिता ने उसे challenge दिया कि वह अपनी courage साबित करे और उस रात अकेले उनके office में सोए।
Swami हमेशा अपनी grandmother के पास सोता था और यह बात उसके पिता को पसंद नहीं थी। Swami ने कहा कि वह अगले महीने की पहली तारीख से अकेले सोएगा, लेकिन उसके पिता ने कहा कि उसे उसी दिन से अकेले सोना होगा।
शाम को Swami अपनी grandmother के पास जाकर उसके blanket के नीचे सो गया। उसके पिता आए और उसे उठाकर अपने office में ले जाने लगे। Swami ने hall में सोने की request की। उसने कहा कि office बहुत dusty है और law books के पीछे scorpions भी हो सकते हैं।
लेकिन उसके पिता ने उसकी बात नहीं मानी। उन्होंने कहा कि Swami को darkness से डरना नहीं सीखना चाहिए। यह केवल habit की बात है और उसे good habits develop करनी चाहिए।
रात बढ़ती गई और घर में silence गहरा होता गया। Swami का heart तेजी से धड़कने लगा। उसे अपने बचपन में सुनी हुई devils और ghosts की सारी कहानियाँ याद आने लगीं। वह bench के नीचे blanket ओढ़कर लेट गया और डर के कारण पसीना आने लगा।
अचानक Swami ने darkness में किसी चीज को अपनी ओर आते देखा। उसे लगा कि कोई ghost उसकी तरफ आ रहा है। वह bench के नीचे से बाहर निकला और उस creature को पूरी ताकत से पकड़ लिया। उसने अपने teeth का भी weapon की तरह इस्तेमाल किया। वह creature दर्द से चिल्लाया।
कुछ ही समय में उसके पिता, cook और servant light लेकर वहाँ पहुँचे। उन्होंने देखा कि एक burglar furniture के बीच पड़ा हुआ था और उसके ankle से blood निकल रहा था। Swami ने उस thief को पकड़ लिया था।
Swami के पिता ने police को बुलाया। Police Swami से बहुत खुश और grateful थी क्योंकि उसने एक notorious thief को पकड़ लिया था। अगले दिन school में Swami के classmates ने उसे congratulate किया और respect से देखा। Headmaster ने कहा कि Swami एक true scout है। उसकी bravery की news Malgudi Times में भी प्रकाशित हुई।
