छोटी Mini पाँच साल की थी और बहुत बातूनी थी। वह हर समय बातें किए बिना नहीं रह सकती थी। उसकी माँ उसके लगातार बोलने से अक्सर परेशान रहती थीं और उसे चुप कराने की कोशिश करती थीं। अपने पिता के साथ Mini की बातचीत हमेशा बहुत lively रहती थी।
एक दिन Mini अचानक अपने पिता के study room में चली गई। उसने अपने पिता के गले में हाथ डालकर पूछा कि Bhola कहता है कि बादलों में एक हाथी रहता है, जो अपनी सूंड से पानी निकालता है और इसी कारण बारिश होती है। पिता के जवाब देने से पहले ही वह खिड़की की ओर दौड़ी और Kabuliwallah को पुकारने लगी।
Kabuliwallah ने जब Mini की ओर देखा तो वह डर गई और अपने पिता के पास भाग गई। उसने सुना था कि Kabuliwallah बच्चों को पकड़कर अपनी sacks में डाल लेते हैं और उन्हें अपने साथ ले जाते हैं। Kabuliwallah Mini के घर आया और उसके पिता ने Mini को उससे मिलने के लिए बाहर भेजा। जल्द ही Mini का डर समाप्त हो गया और वह उस बड़े, दाढ़ी वाले Pathan से प्यार से बातें करने लगी।
Kabuliwallah अब Mini के घर रोज आने लगा। दोनों घंटों बैठकर बातें करते और एक-दूसरे के साथ मजाक करते। उस Kabuliwallah का नाम Rehman था। वह साल में एक बार अपने देश वापस जाता था। जाने से पहले वह उन लोगों से अपने पैसे लेता था जिन पर उसका पैसा बाकी होता था। व्यस्त होने के बावजूद वह Mini से मिलने के लिए हमेशा समय निकाल लेता था।
एक दिन सड़क पर बहुत शोर हुआ। Rehman ने एक ऐसे व्यक्ति पर चाकू से हमला किया था जिस पर उसके पैसे बकाया थे। इस अपराध के कारण उसे जेल भेज दिया गया।
समय बीतता गया और Mini अपने पुराने दोस्त Kabuliwallah को भूल गई। वह बड़ी होकर एक सुंदर युवती बन गई। उसके पिता ने उसकी शादी की तैयारी की। उसी रात उसकी शादी होने वाली थी।
जब Mini के पिता शादी की तैयारियों में व्यस्त थे, तभी एक व्यक्ति उनके पास आया और उन्हें सम्मानपूर्वक सलाम किया। पहले वे उसे पहचान नहीं पाए। फिर उन्हें पता चला कि वह बूढ़ा Rehman, वही Kabuliwallah था।
Mini के पिता ने उसे बताया कि शादी की रस्में चल रही हैं और उसे किसी दूसरे दिन आना चाहिए। Rehman जाने वाला था, लेकिन उसने पीछे मुड़कर पूछा कि क्या वह छोटी बच्ची से मिल सकता है। वह अभी भी Mini को उसी छोटी बच्ची के रूप में याद कर रहा था जो उसके पास दौड़कर आती थी और Kabuliwallah कहकर पुकारती थी।
Rehman ने Mini के लिए सूखे raisins, nuts और almonds का एक छोटा packet दिया। उसने कहा कि उसकी भी Mini जैसी एक छोटी बेटी है और वह उसे याद करता है।
Mini के पिता की आँखों में आँसू आ गए। उन्हें समझ में आया कि Kabuliwallah भी एक पिता है। उन्होंने Mini को बुलाया। Mini दुल्हन के रूप में बाहर आई। Mini को देखकर Kabuliwallah हैरान रह गया, क्योंकि जिस छोटी लड़की को वह जानता था वह अब एक सुंदर महिला बन चुकी थी।
उसे अचानक याद आया कि उसकी अपनी बेटी भी अब बड़ी हो गई होगी और वह रो पड़ा। Mini के पिता ने Rehman को कुछ पैसे दिए और कहा कि वह अपनी बेटी से मिलने जाए और उसे सारी खुशियाँ मिलें।
Mini के पिता को शादी के खर्च कम करने पड़े। वे military band और electric lights का खर्च नहीं उठा सके। फिर भी वे खुश थे क्योंकि उनके पैसे की मदद से एक लंबे समय से अपनी बेटी से दूर पिता अपने इकलौते बच्चे से फिर मिल सकता था।
