Assam भारत के उत्तर-पूर्वी भाग में स्थित एक राज्य है। यह पूर्वी हिमालय की तलहटी के ठीक नीचे स्थित है। इसके चारों ओर Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura और Meghalaya राज्य हैं। Assam के साथ ये सभी राज्य Seven Sisters के नाम से जाने जाते हैं। Assam की राजधानी Dispur है।
Assam प्राकृतिक सुंदरता से भरपूर भूमि है। यहाँ नीली पहाड़ियाँ, घने जंगल, विभिन्न प्रकार के पेड़-पौधे और जीव-जंतु, बड़ी नदियाँ तथा उपजाऊ घाटियाँ हैं। भारत में Assam चाय उगाने वाला सबसे बड़ा राज्य है। महान Brahmaputra River Assam से होकर बहती है।
Assam में कृषि लोगों का मुख्य व्यवसाय है। यहाँ चावल, फल, जूट, गन्ना और चाय प्रमुख कृषि उत्पाद हैं। यह राज्य देश के कुल चाय उत्पादन का लगभग आधा हिस्सा पैदा करता है। Assam तेल, गैस, कोयला और limestone जैसे प्राकृतिक संसाधनों से भी समृद्ध है।
Assam के लोगों के लिए traditional crafts भी रोजगार का महत्वपूर्ण साधन हैं। Pottery, terracotta work, brass craft, jewellery making, bamboo craft, silk और cotton weaving तथा wood craft यहाँ के प्रमुख crafts हैं।
Assam अपने national parks के लिए भी प्रसिद्ध है। National park जंगल का एक बड़ा क्षेत्र होता है जिसकी देखभाल सरकार करती है। Kaziranga National Park एक प्रसिद्ध wildlife sanctuary है। यहाँ rhinoceros, elephants, leopards और Indian bison जैसे जंगली जानवर पाए जाते हैं। इन्हें देखने के लिए open jeep, car या mini bus से जंगल में जाया जा सकता है। चाहें तो elephant की पीठ पर बैठकर भी यात्रा की जा सकती है।
Assam के लोग Assamese या Assamiya भाषा बोलते हैं। Assam festivals की भूमि भी है। Bihu यहाँ का प्रसिद्ध Assamese festival है। यह April के महीने में मनाया जाता है। सभी धर्मों के लोग इसमें भाग लेते हैं और celebrations पूरे महीने चलते हैं। युवा पुरुष और महिलाएँ सुनहरे रंग के silk dresses पहनकर विशेष Bihu Dance करते हैं।
Bihu के दौरान boat races भी आयोजित की जाती हैं। बहुत-सी teams इन races में भाग लेती हैं और बड़ी संख्या में लोग नदी के किनारे से इन्हें देखते हैं।
