आकाश एक गांव में रहता है। उसके गांव में पानी की कमी थी। गांव के लोगों ने वर्षा ऋतु के दौरान पानी की एक-एक बूंद बचाने का निर्णय लिया। उन्होंने तय किया कि जैसे ही बारिश शुरू होगी, वे इस विचार को लागू करेंगे। इस खबर को newspapers में भी प्रकाशित किया गया। इस संबंध में आकाश को अपनी cousin पूजा का एक पत्र मिला। आकाश ने उसे जल्दी से उत्तर दिया।
आकाश ने अपने पत्र में पानी के संरक्षण से संबंधित विचारों के बारे में खुशी व्यक्त की। उसने पूजा की जागरूकता, जिज्ञासा और natural resources के प्रति concern की सराहना की। उसने बताया कि पूजा ने सही अनुमान लगाया था कि उसने अपने गांव में आयोजित Water Conservation Programme के inaugural function में भाग लिया था।
Conservation का अर्थ किसी चीज को बचाना होता है। यह कोई भी natural resource हो सकता है, जैसे water, energy, soil, plants और animals। Water conservation का अर्थ ponds, wells और fields में पानी को सुरक्षित रखना है, जिससे ground water का level बढ़ाया जा सके।
आज हम एक challenging era में रह रहे हैं। पेड़ों की ruthless cutting और forests के destruction के कारण rainfall कम हो गया है। इससे लगभग हर जगह water scarcity पैदा हो रही है और इसका crops की cultivation पर adverse effect पड़ रहा है। यदि fields को पर्याप्त पानी नहीं मिलता, तो food production प्रभावित होती है और villagers cities की ओर migrate करने लगते हैं। इससे cities overcrowded हो जाती हैं और air तथा water pollution बढ़ता है।
Government ने society के सभी sections को आगे आने और पानी की हर एक बूंद बचाने के लिए motivate किया है। Rivers, ponds, wells और tubewells के सूखने और खाली होने को हम देख रहे हैं। हमें चुप नहीं बैठना चाहिए। Water Conservation Programme के अंतर्गत अलग-अलग स्तरों पर rainwater harvesting करने का प्रयास किया जा रहा है।
Farmers अपने fields के चारों ओर Medh या Bunds बनाकर पानी को खेतों में store करेंगे। इसी तरह wells और ponds जैसे water bodies को गहरा और साफ किया जाएगा। पुराने dams की मरम्मत की जाएगी और rivers पर नए dams बनाए जाएंगे, ताकि अधिक पानी conserve किया जा सके। इससे wells, ponds और rivers पानी से भर जाएंगे तथा tubewells recharge होकर पूरे वर्ष पानी देते रहेंगे।
आकाश ने यह भी बताया कि केवल government सब कुछ नहीं कर सकती। केवल slogans लगाने से भी कोई सहायता नहीं होगी। पानी सभी के लिए essential है। इसलिए बच्चों सहित सभी लोगों को Water Conservation Programme में participate करना चाहिए। उसने देखा है कि लोग स्वेच्छा से आगे आकर इस noble cause के लिए मिल-जुलकर काम कर रहे हैं।
अंत में आकाश ने पूजा को अपने पत्र में दी गई जानकारी से लाभ उठाने की आशा व्यक्त की। उसने उसे अपने friends के साथ इसे share करने और अन्य important topics के बारे में information पाने के लिए letters लिखते रहने के लिए कहा।
