भारत को उड़ान देने वाले व्यक्ति का नाम Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata था, जिन्हें लोकप्रिय रूप से JRD कहा जाता था। उनका जन्म 29 July 1904 को Paris में हुआ था। उनके पिता Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata Parsi थे और उनकी माता Suzanne Briere French थीं। JRD का बचपन France और India के बीच यात्रा करते हुए बीता।
1924 में 20 वर्ष की उम्र में JRD, French citizen के रूप में French Army में भर्ती हुए। एक साल बाद उन्हें Cambridge University में admission की तैयारी के लिए England भेजा गया। लेकिन उनके पिता ने उन्हें Bombay वापस बुला लिया ताकि वे Tata Steel Industry में काम कर सकें। उनके पिता का मानना था कि जीवन में सफल होने के लिए college degree आवश्यक नहीं है।

1948 में JRD और Indian Government ने मिलकर Air India शुरू की। 1953 में JRD को Air India का Chairperson बनाया गया। अगले 25 वर्षों तक उन्होंने Air India को सफल बनाने के लिए लगातार मेहनत की।
JRD केवल एक aviator ही नहीं थे, बल्कि वे philanthropist, educationist, sportsman, poet और sculptor भी थे। 1992 में Indian Government ने उन्हें देश के सर्वोच्च civilian award Bharat Ratna से सम्मानित किया।
